David Prentice

David Prentice (4 July 1936 – 7 May 2014) was an English artist, born in Solihull and educated at Moseley Road Secondary School of Art and later at Birmingham School of Art.

Like most of his generation he did National Service in the Artillery before returning to Birmingham School of Art as a teacher, the first of several academic positions.

In 1961 he held a solo exhibition at the RBSA (Royal Birmingham Society of Artists) the first of over 40 solo exhibitions.

A couple of years later he was instrumental in the founding of Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery.

Examples of his work can be found in numerous prestigious international galleries and many private collections.

The example in our collection was purchased at an exhibition in Bromsgrove  in May 1963.  It is untitled and unsigned, the frame reflects his economical approach at the time, being apparently home-made from aluminium angled strips.
